Introduction to the Special Issue

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have become a ubiquitous part of people’s lives all over the world, including in Indonesia. The growing use of these technologies, especially the Internet, has not only implicated the ways individuals communicate, but also influenced the way they connect to each other. With the developments of social media such as blogs, wikis, collaborative websites and other social networking tools to fulfill the personal, organizational, societal and political goals and to influence the way individuals work and live, it is important to understand the implications it brings. This special issue seeks manuscripts that look at a wide variety of ICT uses and what implications these uses have on people, organizations and society in the Indonesian context as the technology becomes more widely available. This issue also welcomes those who look at the other side of the coin, i.e. manuscripts that focus on the cultural, social and political shaping of the technologies by Indonesian society. The goal of this special issue is to offer an understanding and assessment of how ICTs and society have mutually shaped each other, and theoretical considerations of the links between social implications and ICTs.

Bali is a well-known paradise for tourists. Its climate is warm and humid, around 27-32ºC. As in previous years we are likely to offer full scholarships for one year Master degrees at United Kingdom universities and other professional institutions. The scholarships would cover living costs, tuition fees and return airfares.

The Chevening scheme is highly competitive, with only the best applicants invited for interview. We particularly encourage applications from individuals based in eastern Indonesia. Candidates will need to meet the following basic requirements:

• Excellent first degree with a minimum GPA >=3.0.
• Good level of spoken and written English language (IELTS 6.5).
• Minimum of 2 years full time post-graduate (S1) work experience.
• Clear commitment to long-term career development.
• Must be able to demonstrate leadership potential and the capacity to play an important role in Indonesia’s future development.

This Issue is in fact a Special Issue on Data Mining, with the Guest Editors being Dr Anto Satriyo Nugroho (BPPT) and Moch Arif Bijaksana (ITT Telkom) from Indonesia. The IIJ would like to sincerely thank these Guest Editors for their excellent work. We received submissions not only from Indonesia, but from other countries also. Indeed three (3) of the published papers are from authors located overseas.

You may have noticed that this 2nd Issue of 2009 was slightly late in publication. This was primarily due to the extensive review process that took longer than planned.  However, we decided that maintaining quality was of higher priority, even at the cost of the Issue being late by some weeks.
